St. Bernard Parish Officials are prepared for severe weather

All non-emergency offices of St. Bernard Parish Government will be closed at 12:00 Noon today, Thursday, April 18th due to forecasted weather conditions.  Offices will resume normal hours on Monday, April 22, 2019.

Parish Government Crews have been out picking up debris and removing any hazards from the roads. Parish Officials are in constant contact with the weather service and will give updates as they become available.


Residents should secure garbage cans, any loose items around their homes, and they should survey their neighborhoods and pick up any loose and vegetative debris that may cause obstructions to the drainage catch basins. Residents are asked to monitor local news stations for weather updates.

Weather Overview:

WHAT: SLIGHT to ENHANCED RISK of Severe Weather

SLIGHT to MODERATE RISK of heavy rain/flash flooding

WHEN: The main threat timing is expected to begin during the late morning hours through the evening hours.

WHERE: All of Southeast Louisiana and Mississippi.

CONFIDENCE: High confidence in the occurrence of thunderstorms today and into this evening. Moderate to High confidence in the storms becoming severe. Normal confidence in any storms producing flash flooding.

Expected Impacts:

The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:

Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph which could down trees and powerlines and/or cause structural damage.

Isolated tornadoes - a few of which could be strong, mainly along and north of a line from near Baton Rouge to Slidell and across coastal Mississippi.

Hail greater than 1 inch in diameter.

Locally heavy rainfall could lead to ponding of water in low lying areas and areas of poor drainage. If any area sees multiple rounds of thunderstorms, isolated flash flooding could occur.

Transit - St. Bernard transit will close today at 2 p.m. and run on the following holiday schedule on Good Friday, April 19th:

  • There will be a 6:00 a.m. Express Run starting in Poydras.
  • Buses will pass stops every two-hours starting at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m.

Arabi-bound buses will make stops on odd-numbered hours and Poydras-bound buses will make stops on even-numbered hours.

Fanz pick up & drop off times will be 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m., & 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
