Monday, 01 February 2010 07:20
St. Bernard Parish Government by the direction of Parish Councilman Fred Everhardt Jr. is hosting the largest Coastal Tree Reforestation project that St. Bernard Parish has ever attempted.

"We have approximately 140,000 bald cypress tree saplings that we are anticipating planting before the middle of March," Everhardt said.

Councilman Everhardt, with help from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture, acquired the funding for this project from a grant from the Apache Oil Corporation.

The project involves the cooperation and support of the St. Bernard Sheriff's Department, Lake Borgne Basin Levee District, Habitat for Humanity, St. Bernard Project, Volunteers of America, LSU Ag Center 4-H Department under Wayne Burgess, Chalmette High School Principal Wayne Warner, Tony Fernandez former Chief Deputy of the Sheriffs Department, Scott Harding, CEO of National Relief Network from Greensville Michigan, and many other organizations taking hand in this tremendous effort to reforest the coast of St. Bernard Parish.

Media are welcomed to tour the efforts and watch volunteers in action. Call Councilman Everhardt at 504-650-0720 for more information. He will be at the Verrett Fire Station on Thursday, January 26, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
