More than 200
volunteers clean up the fields at the former Hannan High
Former high school to be used for a youth recreational
football-soccer complex
Help came on six
charter busses of people as the Volunteers of America joined
forces with the St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department and the
non-profit St. Bernard Recreation Corporation to prepare the
fields at the former Archbishop Hannan High School.
The recent Saturday push is part of an effort to build three
football/soccer fields for the upcoming fall season. The site is
under lease and will be operated by the St. Bernard Recreation
Department and will be used for soccer and football this fall.
The volunteers got about a week of work done in a seven-hour
period because of the sheer numbers of volunteers. Volunteers of
America, a national organization, sent more than 350 volunteers
to help with several rebuilding projects in St. Bernard
recently, including the work at the Hannan site. Volunteers
cleared trees, cut grass and spread mud as part of the initial
efforts to prepare the fields for youth football and soccer. The
Recreation Department plans to hold the first soccer games at
the facility the first week of August.
