“Safe
Families Night” at Zephyr Field Educates Community on
Domestic Violence and Economic Empowerment
The Allstate
Foundation donates $10,000 to local St. Bernard Battered Women’s
Program
WHAT: Over the course of a day in Louisiana, 849
victims of domestic violence sought help
from local
programs, according to a 2007 survey by the National Census of
Domestic Violence Services. The Allstate Foundation and the National
Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) are sponsoring “Safe
Families Night” with the New Orleans Zephyrs to raise awareness of
financial abuse and the economic empowerment resources available to
survivors and victims.
At the game, The
Allstate Foundation along with the NNEDV will be on hand to provide
life-saving information and resources to Zephyrs fans with the hope
that the information will be used or passed along to others in need.
The Allstate
Foundation will donate $10,000 to St. Bernard Battered Women’s
Program for services to financially empower local survivors of
domestic violence. A donation presentation will occur during the
event.
This is the
first year The Allstate Foundation and NNEDV are partnering with
Minor League Baseball for “Safe Families Night.” The initiative will
take place during games in five major cities, including New Orleans,
to educate communities in a non-threatening environment.
WHY:
Domestic violence affects all of us. Nearly 25 percent of women
report being abused by a husband or a partner in their lifetimes.
Economic
control is one of the most common ways an
abuser prevents a victim from leaving a dangerous relationship. Abusers
who often block access to money and other financial resources to
maintain control and the complicated structure of the nation’s
financial institutions create insurmountable hurdles for survivors
of domestic violence to overcome.
