St. Bernard Parish Government will hold a public forum and open house to get feedback on environmental and quality of life issues and to learn about approaches to address these issues

St. Bernard Parish will hold a public forum and open house that will focus on three main areas of concern expressed by residents during previous meetings held February 23rd and March 29th and discussed in more detail during Focus Group Meetings held in May.

  • Water quality

  • Air quality

  • Parish recovery

Educational information and planning progress will be presented 10am until 1pm, and an independent review of environmental goals and discussions will occur 1pm to 2pm on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Chalmette High School Presentation Room, 2nd floor, 1100 E. Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette, Louisiana. Lunch will be provided.

Invited speakers will address stormwater runoff, household hazardous waste and solutions to water, air and soil pollutions problems. Agencies or groups that will present information will include but not be limited to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency. A complete agenda will be available online at www.sbpg.net/care.

St. Bernard Parish Government has initiated a public participation process to identify environmental issues impacting quality of life of its residents. Funded by an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) grant, the Parish with assistance from Toxicological & Environmental Associates, Inc. (TEA) will conduct five public meetings and multiple, focused meetings resulting in a citizen supported pollution reduction plan. Meetings will focus on identifying the issues, educating Parish participants on these issues -- separating myth from reality and identifying solutions. Solutions will include EPA voluntary programs, many of which cost very little. For more expensive solutions, Parish Government will apply for a CARE II grant among other opportunities.

For more information about this CARE program go to www.sbpg.net/care or please call (504) 259-5331.
